Study by software development company TIOBE Software identified the most popular programming languages for this month, based on the number of relevant search engine queries. The top ten, starting with the most popular ang doing down the list, are Java, C, Visual Basic, PHP, C++, Perl, C#, Python, JavaScript, and Delphi.

The changes in the popularity rating since the month  of June place Visual Basic at the top of the gainers list.  Search engine queries for "Visual Basic" in July were nearly 5% more than during the previous month.  "Java" queries were up 2.19%.

Programming languages that lost popularity in July were C, C++, and Perl.  All other changes in the top 10 were below 1%. The study does not include HTML, XML, SQL, and ASP.NET.

The top 50 programming languages listing is available at www.tiobe.com/index.htm?tiobe_index.  From the study's homepage: "There was a funny mail from Marcelo Barros de Almeida. He suggested to search for the query '<language> sucks' (sorry for this term) to get a feeling about languages that are unpopular. The top 5 is 1. Java, 2. PHP, 3. C++, 4. C, and 5. Ruby."
