Yes, there are many ways to build web applications. One of them is Jifty, written in “Ruby's quirky big brother”, Perl.

Says the three-person development team: “Out of the proverbial box, Jifty comes with one way to do everything you should need to do: One database mapper, one templating system, one web services layer, one AJAX toolkit, one set of handlers for standalone or FastCGI servers. We work hard to make all the bits play well together, so you don't have to. “

Jifty is freely available for download, since it licensed the same way as Perl 5. In order to run it, you need Perl 5.8.3 or newer, a database – Oracle, Postgre, MySQL, or SQLite, and some Perl modules from CPAN.

More information about Jifty is available at the official site http://www.jifty.org . The site itself is built with Wifty, a Wiki built in a few lines of Jifty code. Its code is freely available from the Jifty subversion repository. The repository also contains a demo blog project.

A podcast interview with team leader Jesse Vincent is available at http://www.perlcast.com/audio/Perlcast_Interview_027_Jifty.mp3 .
