For eighth year in a row, the Perl Foundation will recognize major supporters of the Perl community by presenting them with the White Camel Award.  The use.perl.org forum reports that this year the award comittee has provided an email address for public proposals on award nominees.  Anyone willing to propose a nominee can do so by writing to [email protected].

The winners will be announced at the annual O'Reilly Open Source Convention. The White Camels recognize the people who give their time and effort to help Perl be not just a programming language, but a community.

The last year's winners were announced on August 2nd, 2005.  They were: Stas Bekman, an advocate for large-scale application in Perl and creator of the  600-page mod_perl guide;  Eric Cholet, the technical manager of the YAPC Europe Foundation and co-author of "A Conference Toolkit"; and  Andy Lester , one of the prominent voices advocating testing and quality assurance.

The White Camel Awards were initiated by the Perl Mongers and O'Reilly & Associates at the 1999 Perl Conference.  According to the Perl Foundation, today the White Camel "... is a rare and revered individual. The White Camel Awards recognize the many significant contributions made by the unsung heros of the Perl community. The efforts of these volunteers collectively make the Perl language and the Perl community better for all of us."
