ActiveState released a new version of its Perl distribution. The new version of ActivePerl comes after last month's announcement by the Perl 5 development team that the eighth maintenance release of Perl 5.8 is out.

According to ActiveState's website, ActivePerl is a "quality-assured, ready-to-install distribution of Perl, available for AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows. The standard ActivePerl distribution is available for free download." ActivePerl contains: core Perl; the Perl Package Manager (PPM) for installing CPAN packages; PerlEx, the Perl performance plug-in for IIS; popular modules; and complete online help.

ActivePerl is maintained on two tracks to support users who have moved to Perl 5.8 as well as those still using Perl 5.6. Mac OS X support is currently available for the Perl 5.8 track.
