Tamino On Rails from Software AG Simplifies Development of Dynamic Web Applications

July 20, 2007; 08:30 AM

Software AG, a global leader in business infrastructure software, today announced that it has published Tamino On Rails as an Open Source contribution under Sourceforge.net . Ruby on Rails is a rapidly growing, Open Source framework for developing database- driven Web applications. This package extends interoperability to the Tamino XML Server, Software AG's native XML database management system. Tamino users can now take advantage of the speed and ease of development offered by Ruby on Rails to more quickly create new applications. By building these applications using an XML database that is optimized for the Web, developers can create faster, more dynamic and better performing applications.

"Due to its native support for all XML document types and schemas, Tamino can quickly configure multiple data sources into a single view. This makes it a premier platform for creating highly-dynamic, multi-channel Web applications. As demonstrated by today's announcement, we're committed to maintaining Tamino's position as the leading XML database," said Dr. Peter Kurpick, Software AG's executive board member with management responsibilities for the webMethods business line. "With minimal coding and configuration required, Ruby on Rails makes it comparatively easy to develop highly responsive applications and Website that fully leverage Tamino's extensibility. Furthermore, Tamino helps to overcome some of the lack of adaptability inherent in the framework due to the underlying support for complex data types and manipulations that it offers."

Tamino On Rails, v1.0 provides applications using Ruby and the Rails Web application framework with access to XML-based data sets in XQuery-capable databases. By doing so, it minimizes the time and effort needed to create Web-based front ends to XML datasets while improving programmer productivity and accuracy. This package contains all Tamino-specific Rails framework resources including functions to access / create / modify / delete data sets stored in Tamino.

The published software has been implemented and tested using Software AG's Tamino XML Server and provides connectivity to other XML DBMSs as well. It is available free-of-charge under the liberal Apache license and can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/taminoonrails .
