CollabNet Partners with Ohloh to Bring Project Dashboards to Public and Open Source Development Communities Powered by CollabNet

April 10, 2007; 06:38 AM
CollabNet, the leading provider of collaborative software development solutions, today announced that it has partnered with Ohloh to provide project dashboards to over 1 million users on the CollabNet platform and users of CollabNet Subversion.

Ohloh is the market-leading resource for intelligence on thousands of open source and public projects. The company collects software metrics from a variety of sources such as the project’s source code and the project’s software development infrastructure. CollabNet will make Ohloh’s development dashboards available directly within its collaborative software development platform.

CollabNet hosts more than 25 public developer communities for a wide range of customers. The partnership with Ohloh gives these customers more intelligence about the level of activity on their developer networks and the effectiveness of their open source strategies. Because the dashboards are available within the CollabNet environment, community managers and members of open source projects will have easy access to valuable project data. This will facilitate communication among community members and foster growth.

“Ohloh is the trusted provider of development metrics on thousands of open source projects,” said Scott Collison, CEO of Ohloh. “By offering our metrics directly through the CollabNet platform, we bring advanced project information to their users so they know what is happening with their projects and how they stack up against other open source projects.”

The integration of Ohloh into the CollabNet platform also provides benefits to companies that are evaluating open source software for internal use. Companies can rapidly evaluate the health of a project through the Ohloh dashboard, which displays information such as the level of community activity and the maturity of a project’s code base. Further information includes top project contributors, size of the code base, detailed license information and other companies’ experiences with the software. This information will now be accessible at the same place where the software is developed and made available.

“IDC sees more and more open source companies building partnerships to deliver additional value to the users of open source software,” said Matt Lawton, Program Director, Open Source Software Business Models at IDC. “This partnership between CollabNet and Ohloh is a great example of companies combining their open source go-to market strategies and it further strengthens the open source software ecosystem.”

Ohloh project dashboards are also available through openCollabNet, the new extension to CollabNet’s platform and Subversion (http://open.collab.net). As an online community, openCollabNet gives users free access to product extensions, in-depth technical content, community resources, support and training and ways to interact with other developers.

“CollabNet hosts thousands of projects for its customers and these communities add up to over one million users. CollabNet is building a network of partners around openCollabNet to add value for these users”, said Bill Portelli, president and CEO of CollabNet. “The partnership with Ohloh is consistent with our value-add strategy because it provides advanced project metrics for these users which leverages 8 years of content built by the open source and developer communities of CollabNet’s customers.”

Customers can try the Ohloh project dashboards on openCollabNet at http://open.collab.net. Tigris.org, the home of the Subversion open source project, is already leveraging the integration between CollabNet and Ohloh.
