Stealth technology at the kernel level recently transitioned from the exclusive domain of malicious attackers to use in the field by consumer-facing companies like Sony and Viacom. This shift raises a number of pressing questions and has generated strong opinions throughout the security community about the definitions, uses and defenses against rootkit technology. As part of the Hackers & Threats Conference Track, in a presentation, titled “Rootkits: Beyond Good and Evil,” Iván Arce and an esteemed group of panelists comprised of rootkit developers, academics and practitioners, will discuss and debate how rootkits will affect the future computing life of organizations worldwide by addressing the following questions:

  • What makes something a rootkit?
  • Does it make sense to use rootkit technology as part of a digital rights management solution?
  • What is the relationship between rootkits and botnets?
  • How can companies defend their machines against rootkits?
  • What is the state of the art in rootkit technology?
