Zend and IBM Combine Performance, Scalability and Rich Content Support in New Version of Zend Core for IBM

November 1, 2006; 02:58 AM
Zend Technologies, Inc., the PHP company, announced the general availability of a new release of Zend Core for IBM. The product has been upgraded to include tighter database integration and support for high-volume traffic on low-cost hardware. It is available now as a free download at www.zend.com.

Zend Core for IBM delivers a fully tested and supported environment that enables developers to get up and running quickly using PHP supported by Zend on IBM infrastructure. Zend provides support for Zend Core for IBM via the Zend Network, a comprehensive service and support system that delivers enterprise-quality updates and support to PHP developers.

Zend Core for IBM V1.5 includes several important product enhancements for the development of high-performance, scalable modern web applications.

  • A free, integrated DB2 Express 9 data server
  • All new support for Informix Dynamic Server
  • pureXMLTM support delivers efficient, versatile capabilities for managing XML data
  • An optional connection pooling feature allows sharing of server resources among requesting clients.

The increasing sophistication and complexity of PHP applications in the enterprise are driving a high volume of database connections and require higher levels of scalability. With the new Connection Concentrator functionality of DB2 9, Zend Core for IBM v1.5 can support massive amounts of connections on low-cost hardware, lowering total cost of ownership.

“More companies are using XML to help implement service-oriented architectures, dynamically exchange data among disparate systems, and adapt to rapidly changing business conditions,” said Bernie Spang, director, IBM data servers. “Savvy IT leaders are looking for ways to share, search, and manage the wealth of XML data records, documents and messages being generated.”

The DB2 9 pureXML feature has revolutionized support for XML data, handling XML as a new data type that is stored in a natural hierarchy that is different from relational data. According to Mike Pinette, vice president of business development and alliances at Zend, “The combination of highly efficient handling of dynamic database connections with the rich media and content support via pureXML sets a new standard for creating modern, scalable Web applications. Coupling DB2 and PHP accelerates Web 2.0 application development and provides relevant, responsive and actionable data regardless of data type.”
