Python 2.5 Released

The Python Software Foundation released the final, production-ready version of Python 2.5.  The latest version of the programming language has been in development for nearly a year, and introduces a number of new features and bug fixes.


Hightlights for Python 2.5 include the inclusion of nearly 1,000 patches and bug fixes since Python 2.4, speed optimizion, new built-in modules, and several new core language features. 

Python 2.5 is the latest major release of Python.  Python was first introduced by Dutch programmer Guido van Rossum in 1990. In terms of programming practices, Python is often compared to languages like  Perl, Ruby, and Scheme. Python is widely used in industry and academia for a wide variety of purposes. Some of the largest projects that utilise Python are the Zope application server and the BitTorrent file sharing systems. 

Python is distributed under the liberal GPL-compatible licence.  Downloads are available at the project's website at http://www.python.org.
