Sybase Boosts SQL Developer Productivity With WorkSpace 2.0

December 11, 2007; 06:14 AM

DUBLIN, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sybase, Inc. (NYSE:SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today announced Sybase® WorkSpace 2.0, an integrated design and development environment combining enterprise modeling, database development, data federation, Web application development and services development and orchestration in an Eclipse, open-source framework. New enhancements to Sybase WorkSpace include advanced integration with Sybase Adaptive Server® Enterprise, Sybase IQ and SQL Anywhere® and further incorporation of Open Source technology through plug-ins such as the Eclipse Data Tooling Platform (DTP) and Services Toolkit.

Sybase WorkSpace 2.0 provides sophisticated integration and interoperability across the whole infrastructure within IT -- from design, development, to deployment. Moreover, WorkSpace enables a holistic approach to fully leveraging the Sybase environment from a data level, a reporting level and analytics level, including development of data to services and development from the web to data. In addition, individual development modules within WorkSpace, combined with the extensibility of Eclipse plug-ins, give IT shops the flexibility to customize to get the exact functionality they need in a development environment.

WorkSpace enables us to manage our database applications to keep up with mission-critical risk analysis, said Christian Moeller, vice president-director of Business System IT, ACE Tempest Re, one of the world's leading global property, casualty insurance and reinsurance organizations. The new features in Workspace 2.0 will simplify our development for both Sybase ASE and Sybase IQ, give us the agility that ACE Tempest Re needs, and ultimately save valuable time for our developers.

There has been a continuous increase in the use of Eclipse for development in the financial services space, says John Evans, president, Evans Data. "In fact, 48% of FSI developers use Eclipse vs. 19% for other industries. This strong gain in Eclipse usage is helping drive the adoption of products such as Sybase Workspace in the financial services vertical."

"WorkSpace 2.0 is built on Eclipse to provide the plug-in flexibility the Eclipse ecosystem offers," said Dimitri Volkmann, director of Product Management. "Businesses, in particular financial services companies, need to extend and enhance their existing Sybase solutions quickly, build entirely new and innovative applications, and adjust their Sybase environment in response to events, such as M&As and restructurings. Through the combination of the Eclipse Framework and the integration of key design and development tools, WorkSpace gives SQL developers the flexible and agile tools to tailor high-quality solutions to their own unique business needs."

New Features in Workspace 2.0 include:

  • Enhanced support for Sybase ASE 15, including DDL generation, ad-hoc data migration, and ad-hoc query window,
  • Market-leading SQL editing and debugging for Sybase ASE, SQL Anywhere and Sybase IQ,
  • Heterogeneous support for notification of real-time database events,
  • Sybase IQ support enhanced for Analytics and ASE Migration, and
  • Creation and management of Sybase Search servers.
