IBM and BEA Tools are Tops for SOA, New Evans Data IDE User Survey Shows

IBM’s Rational Application Developer users are the most likely to have SOA projects in development today according to Evans Data’s recent Developer’s Choice IDE user survey, while BEA’s Weblogic Workshop users are most likely to already have SOA projects deployed. Oracle’s JDeveloper and Genuitec’s MyEclipse IDEs were also strong in SOA development. The worldwide survey of over 1600 IDE users measured SOA development as well as satisfaction with IDE features and capabilities, and user characteristics.

“IBM and BEA have both been focused on SOA development and providing superior tools to developers for that purpose for some time,” said John Andrews, President and CEO of Evans Data Corp. “That kind of dedication pays off in more SOA user implementations. On the free and open source fronts, both Oracle and Genuitec have made great strides to simplify SOA development with their tools, and the strong number of projects in development reflects that.”

The survey, which was conducted this summer, studied user satisfaction and usage of top IDEs around the globe. In addition, IDE users were profiled as to age, experience, company size and other demographics. Some of the additional findings were:

• Microsoft Visual Studio remains the most used IDE across all regions except Latin America.
• Sun’s NetBeans users gave that IDE the best rating of any in terms of the performance of the applications created using it.
• CodeGear’s Delphi was deemed the easiest to use, although Adobe’s Macromedia Studio users felt it had the best web design tools.
• Delphi’s users were the most experienced, while the least experienced developers had adopted Adobe’s Macromedia Studio.
