New 'MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition' -- Reduces Cost & Complexity of Telecom Subscriber Databases

February 21, 2007; 06:42 AM
MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced the formation of a new Telecom sales and business unit to meet the growing demand for its high-availability real-time database solutions in the converging telecom industry. The company also announced the availability of a new version of its MySQL Cluster product, especially designed and certified for use in carrier grade telecom environments, such as such as network subscriber databases (HLR, HSS) and Service Delivery Platforms (SDP).

At last weeks 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, many companies spoke of the urgent need for the industry to evolve to centralized subscriber-centric networks that will increase average revenue per user (ARPU) while reducing system cost and complexity.

Only MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade provides the telecom industry with the interoperability and performance of a relational database, plus the flexibility and TCO-savings of open source to power the next generation of subscriber-centric networks, said Joe Morrissey, senior director of worldwide sales for MySQL ABs new Telecom business unit. Our new solution can scale better and has higher performance and availability than legacy proprietary technology -- yet costs 90 percent less.

MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition is a real-time, shared-nothing clustered database system that has been specially designed to meet the high availability, scalability and low latency requirements of telecom applications. Based on technology initially developed by Ericsson, MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition is already at the heart of subscriber databases and SDP applications for leading TEMs, including Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia.

"With MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition, we have successfully migrated to an ATCA-based Linux platform," said Hervé Saliou, Business Manager of the Subscriber Database Management BU of Alcatel-Lucent. "This has allowed us to standardize our platform to take advantage of an open IT blade solution and at the same time, keep the high levels of scalability and availability required by our customers, including Tier 1."
