F5 Introduces Industry's Fastest Application Delivery Platform

January 29, 2007; 05:39 AM
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced a new release of its industry leading BIG-IP® software as well as a new high performance BIG-IP 8800 platform. The new solutions allow customers to consolidate a wide range of application delivery tasks onto a single platform, while simultaneously simplifying the building, testing and delivery of networked applications. As a result, customers enjoy lower acquisition and operations costs which substantially lower the TCO of Application Delivery Networking.

The 8800 is an ideal application switch to help Zango manage business growth and control costs, said Doug Hanhart, Chief Information Officer of Zango, an online media company. We have more than 20 million opt-in consumers adding 200,000 new users each day enjoying our online content. But, even with this traffic volume and growth expectation, the BIG-IP 8800 is powerful enough to allow us to consolidate traffic from multiple lower-end BIG-IPs onto a single platform, which is much more cost effective and easier to manage than multiple units. We couldnt do this with any of the other products on the market today.

Industrys Fastest Application Delivery Networking Solution

Today, customers require application delivery devices to process traffic at layer 7. Examples of this type of processing include SSL, compression and traffic switching based on URI header information. The new BIG-IP v9.4 software running on the BIG-IP 8800 platform is more than twice as fast as its nearest competitor across a wide range of layer 7 performance areas, including:

  • Up to 8Gbps L7 throughput
  • Up to 6Gbps SSL bulk throughput
  • Up to 48,000 SSL transactions per second
  • Up to 6Gbps of Compression throughput

To achieve this industry leading performance F5 has employed several advanced technologies:

  • Industrys first support of clustered multiprocessing though F5s TMOS technology, allowing performance increases up to 10 times over single processor and single core ADC solutions
  • F5s exclusive Packet Velocity ASIC 10 (PVA10) now provides DDOS protection that can handle over 7.4 million SYN floods per second (3 times more than the nearest competitor) while still processing legitimate connections
  • Next generation compression ASICs that drive faster throughput rates and superior compression ratios to help further offload and accelerate application delivery

Escalating demands of new application architectures and protocols, as well as the drive toward SOA and real-time infrastructures, are fueling enterprises need for advanced networking technologies, said Joe Skorupa, Research VP Enterprise Network Services and Infrastructure, Gartner, Inc. Data center architects and application developers should consider advanced technologies such as high performance application delivery controllers that are designed to simplify application development and deployment, while reducing cost and complexity.

Virtualization Streamlines Building, Testing and Delivery of Applications

With this release F5 has expanded TMOS, adding the ability to virtualize the system into discrete partitions and Administrative Domains. This enables enterprises and service providers to serve multiple business units and customers more effectively on a single shared device, lowering both capital and administrative costs. This virtualization technology allows network administrators to delegate limited network configuration control to those who normally have no configuration access at all, allowing trusted application and security administrators to perform needed tasks to just their portion of the network. As a result, companies can deploy applications more rapidly and be assured they will run correctly when rolled out.

Between traffic levels intensifying due to web applications, voice, IPTV, email, spam, etc. and the continued drive toward consolidation, our customers are requiring application delivery platforms that are faster and smarter, said Jason Needham, Director of Product Management at F5. The new release of BIG-IP offers unprecedented application networking intelligence combined with industry leading full proxy performance through TMOS. In addition, BIG-IP helps to ensure the successful rollout of applications by extending the collaboration between network and application groups through virtualization and application/protocol specific monitors.

Availability

BIG-IP v9.4 software and the BIG-IP 8800 hardware platform are available immediately. The new software will run on all newer BIG-IP platforms. Existing F5 customers with current maintenance agreements can upgrade to version 9.4 at no additional cost.
