solidDB for MySQL Sets Performance Record in Public Benchmark

Now Generally Available, solidDB for MySQL Meets Growing Enterprise Demand for Open Source, Mission-Critical Databases

December 18, 2006; 03:26 AM
Solid Information Technology, a provider of fast, always-on and affordable databases used in more than 3,000,000 mission-critical deployments worldwide, today announced that solidDB for MySQL outperformed other MySQL transactional database engines in a public benchmark test. The benchmark results confirmed that solidDB for MySQL is the open source database that meets the performance and scalability requirements of high throughput, mission-critical applications. The publication of the results also coincided with the general availability of solidDB for MySQL, an open source relational database management system (RDBMS) that has been developed in partnership with MySQL AB and consists of the MySQL® server and solidDB Storage Engine.

Solid additionally announced today that it secured 4 million of additional financing to accelerate the delivery of its open source database products to the enterprise market (see accompanying press release).

The TM1 Benchmark results shows that on multi-CPU hardware, solidDB for MySQL offers customers shorter response time and higher levels of scalability than equivalent MySQL implementations that use Oracle's InnoDB. Results demonstrated that:

  • solidDB for MySQL processed more than twice the number of transactions than Oracle InnoDB
  • solidDB for MySQLs performance stayed constant with increasing database size while InnoDBs performance significantly decreased as the database size increased beyond 100,000 rows
  • solidDB for MySQL completed 80% of sample transactions in less than five milliseconds, while InnoDB completed 80% of the same sample transactions in less than nine milliseconds

MySQL is committed to delivering innovative, high-quality database solutions that meet a variety of end-user requirements, said Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL AB. MySQL users can now take advantage of Solids high-performance, scalable storage engine for their mission-critical, high-throughput transactional applications. We congratulate Solid on the general availability of their product.

solidDB for MySQL is a version of MySQL that leverages a solidDB-based storage engine to deliver superior scalability and performance for MySQL users. The product consists of the MySQL Server, MyISAM storage engine, solidDB storage engine, and a high performance on-line backup utility. The product includes exactly the same code as the generally-available MySQL Server and can be accessed with MySQL drivers and tools that have been developed by MySQL AB and the MySQL community. This makes it extremely easy for enterprise users and ISVs to take advantage of the scalability and performance delivered by solidDB for MySQL.

Enterprise end-users need immediate access to business-critical information and want to achieve results fast, regardless of which database is managing the data, said Giacomo Lorenzin, CEO of HiT Software. Our DBMoto application allows users to move data between different databases efficiently. DBMoto, which already supported the MySQL database, worked out of the box with solidDB for MySQL, without requiring any changes. We were also impressed with the performance of Solids solution. solidDB for MySQL ultimately gives enterprise development teams a trusted, proven solution that meets the rigorous demands of todays real-time enterprise application requirements.

solidDB for MySQL is designed for transactional applications and supports full ACID compliance with configurable transaction isolation levels, both optimistic and pessimistic concurrency control, Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) with non-blocking reads and writes, row-level locking, and support for foreign keys and referential integrity.

Within the high-growth DBMS market, research consistently shows that open source is the fastest growing segment of the database market and this market is ready to adopt open source databases that support highly demanding mission-critical applications, said Alain Couder, CEO and president, Solid Information Technology. The general availability of solidDB for MySQL, which has been designed and built on top of Solids 14 years of technology expertise in the telecommunications and enterprise database markets, strongly positions Solid for rapid adoption across the enterprise.

In April, Solid Information Technology and MySQL announced that Solid Information Technology is a MySQL partner through the support of the MySQL Certified Storage Engine Program (www.mysql.com/engines.html). The MySQL Certified Storage Engine Program is a way for third-party ISVs and open source community developers to produce high-quality database engines for the millions of MySQL database users worldwide. The companies also announced a reseller agreement. The two companies will work together to promote and sell solidDB as part of the MySQL Enterprise subscription service.

Benchmark Methodology

The TM1 Benchmark was used to test the two products. solidDB for MySQL beta 5 and MySQL 5.0.27 with InnoDB Storage Engine performance were measured on 8 dual-core AMD Opteron processors with 2GB cache size and a 64 concurrent connection to the database.
